Decoding Shadripus in Astrology
By Srikant Tadigadapa
In the ancient wisdom traditions of India, the Shadripus — the six enemies of the mind — are considered the primary obstacles to spiritual progress and inner peace. Understanding these internal adversaries through the lens of astrology provides a powerful framework for self-transformation.
The Six Enemies of the Mind
Kama (Lust/Desire) is the excessive craving for sensory pleasures that distracts from higher purpose. Krodha (Anger) is the destructive force that arises when desires are unfulfilled. Lobha (Greed) is the insatiable hunger for more, regardless of actual need. Mada (Arrogance/Pride) is the inflated sense of self that creates separation from others. Moha (Delusion/Attachment) is the inability to see reality clearly, leading to unhealthy attachments. Matsarya (Jealousy/Envy) is the resentment of others’ good fortune that poisons one’s own happiness.
Trigunas in Jyotishya
Vedic philosophy identifies three fundamental qualities (Gunas) that pervade all of creation: Sattva (purity, harmony, knowledge), Rajas (passion, activity, desire), and Tamas (inertia, darkness, ignorance). In Jyotishya (Vedic astrology), each planet embodies these Gunas in different proportions. Jupiter and the Sun are primarily Sattvic, Venus and Mercury are Rajasic, and Saturn, Mars, Rahu, and Ketu carry Tamasic qualities. The Shadripus arise primarily from Rajasic and Tamasic influences in the chart.
Planetary Associations
Each Shadripu is associated with specific planetary energies. Mars governs Krodha (anger), Venus governs Kama (lust), Jupiter when afflicted can manifest as Lobha (greed), the Sun in excess creates Mada (arrogance), the Moon when afflicted produces Moha (delusion), and Saturn can trigger Matsarya (jealousy). Understanding these associations in your birth chart helps identify which internal enemies are strongest for you.
Transformation Paths
The Shadripus are not meant to be suppressed but transformed. Kama can be channeled into passionate pursuit of dharma. Krodha can become righteous determination. Lobha can transform into generous abundance consciousness. Mada can evolve into healthy self-confidence. Moha can become deep devotion. Matsarya can be transmuted into inspiration and motivation. Astrological awareness helps you identify the timing and methods most effective for your personal transformation journey.
